Turkmenistan expands hydrogen sulfide gas processing using environmentally clean technologies
Turkmenistan is carrying out extensive work on natural gas preparation, purification, and processing, applying modern technologies that reduce the environmental impact. Special attention is being paid to developing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas fields, which allows for the extraction of valuable chemical raw materials without harming the atmosphere. The country has established production of export-grade commercial gas purified from organic and inorganic impurities, which is of major importance for transporting «blue fuel» via pipeline. As a result of gas processing, the main product obtained is commercial gas, along with a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons and sulfur. The comprehensive processing of enriched natural gases and associated petroleum gases is of particular interest, as their components serve as raw materials for the production of polymer products, synthetic fibers, surfactants, and synthetic detergents. Hydrogen sulfide gas deposits are typically located at depths of 3–5 kilometers, where reservoir pressure and temperature are significantly elevated. Despite their complex composition, such deposits are of great importance for the country's energy sector and industry. An example is the «Galkynyş» gas field, where enormous plants have been built capable of processing tens of billions of cubic meters of gas annually. At these facilities, toxic hydrogen sulfide is not released into the atmosphere but is instead chemically processed: the gas is neutralized, and pure sulfur is extracted, preventing air pollution from sulfur compounds. Highly sensitive automatic sensors and monitoring systems capable of promptly detecting gas leaks have been installed around the fields and plants. Thus, the development of hydrogen sulfide gas deposits in Turkmenistan is being carried out using modern high technologies, closed production systems, and strict environmental controls, without causing harm to the environment.
